FORSYTH BARR MATINEE SERIES ONE – SUBLIME SCHUBERT

Although Schubert’s fourth symphony is nicknamed ‘Tragic’, its bubbly vitality and sublime melodies nevertheless impress. But due to Beethoven’s prominence at the time, the work, completed in 1816, wasn’t publicly premièred until 1849, more than two decades after Schubert’s death.

Australian Benjamin Bayl will conduct the DSO for the first time. Having completed study in England, he has since established an impressive career conducting leading orchestras and opera companies worldwide. He is the Co-Founder of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, and the Associate Director of The Hanover Band, a leading UK period-instrument orchestra. Robert Orr, NZSO’s Principal Oboe, is our soloist in Mozart’s Oboe Concerto. This work displays Mozart’s characteristically lovely melodies in the slow movement, balanced by cheerful, lively outer movements. Orr, lauded for the “plaintive beauty” of his signature sound (Middle-C, Lindis Taylor), is sure to bring this classic work to rich life.
